You shut your alarm off, stand up, head to the bathroom, turn on the shower and bask yourself in…TOXINS???
If you’re like most people, you probably like to shower. But did you know your shower could be causing you more harm than good thanks to your shower curtain?
Most of us have shower curtains and shower curtain liners. Many of those shower curtains are made of vinyl, more scientific- compound named Polyvinyl Chloride aka PVC.
In June 2008 study released by the Center for Health, Environment & Justice– a company devoted to putting a stop to environmental health harm caused by chemicals showed a study that PVC plastic contains numerous harmful chemicals including volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
The study showed that 108 different (VOCs) were released from the shower curtain and into the air over the course of twenty-eight days.
One week- 40 VOCs
Two weeks- 16 VOCS
Three weeks- 11 VOCs
Four weeks- 4 VOCs
The level found was over 16 times greater than the recommended guidelines for indoor air quality established by the U.S. Green Building Council for seven consecutive days.
The total VOCs in the Wal-Mart shower curtain was so high that the equipment was saturated and testing had to be halted so that the equipment would not be damaged.
A new fresh and clean shower is appealing to everyone. What we don’t think about is the dangers something so simply, so common could be causing us- and our families.
You might still be wondering though what exactly the effects of this ‘PVC’ has on your health. Let’s take a look.
Polyvinyl Chloride is an off-gassing compound, meaning the VOCs emit chemical gasses into our air. That new car, fresh carpet, brand new mattress smell- is the release of dangerous chemicals. Each time we use our showers, the heat and steam from the water allow those gasses to be released into our air over and over again.
Some of the symptoms of PVC include:
-Central Nervous System disorders
-Reproductive organ damage
-Lowered sperm count
…just to name a few.
The effects of this dangerous compound are real, and really scary.
Not only are plastic shower curtains harmful but they’re wasteful. I decided to make the switch from a vinyl shower curtain to an organic and eco-friendly one and never looked back.
Here are my personal two favorites. These are options that can be washed and reused for years.
-Hemp is by far my favorite. It’s naturally resistant to mold and bacteria and dries super quick. My recommendation and a highly rated option is from Bean Products, you can find it here.
-Lifekind is another brand that carries an organic shower curtain made of cotton canvas can be found here. Another with great reviews!
