One minute you’re going about your day and the next you’re searching the internet for symptoms and signs of the stomach flu.
We’ve all been there and none of us want to go back.
No one enjoys praying to the porcelain God’s all night- NO ONE. So, as a mother of four little ones I try my hardest to keep all of our immune systems in tip-top shape, but sometimes- sick just happens.
Nothing pains me more than the sight of my children sick or uncomfortable-except for maybe having to give them chemical laden, neon orange over the counter medicine that you and I both know all too well.
The problem with over the counter pain relievers, fever reducers and decongestants is that they only treat the symptoms. Symptoms are a sign from your body that it’s sick. These are good things- REALLY!
Imagine having a stomach virus without the vomiting or diarrhea- it would take forever for our bodies to expel all the sick-causing bacteria and viruses and would cause great damage to our bodies.
The word ‘flu’ is thrown around a little more than need be this time of year and to avoid further confusion-the stomach ‘flu’ really isn’t the flu at all.
Gastroenteritis rather, is the inflammation of the intestines caused by a virus or bacteria. The most common culprits are Rotavirus and Norovirus.
When you intestines are inflamed this triggers the vomiting, diarrhea, cramping, fevers, etc. These are your symptoms, caused by your immune system doing exactly what it was designed to do- GET RID OF THE BAD GUYS!
Taking an over the counter pain reliever, fever reduces, anti-diarrheal, etc. not only damages your body but interferes with your immune system’s ability to fight off these bacteria and viruses alas, prolonging your symptoms and sickness.
Next time when you find yourself doing that frantic ‘stomach flu signs’ internet search when Gastroenteritis does strike remember this totally awesome and one of my family’s favorite natural remedies- Activated Charcoal.
This is where I’m going to get a little science-y on you…
What does Activated Charcoal do?
Activated Charcoal works through a chemical process called ADsorption rather than ABsorption. I’m sure you’re asking “what the heck does that mean”?
ABsorption is basically the process of your body assimilating the nutrients and even toxins into the bloodstream.
ADsorption is the process of something binding or adhering to another element.
Activated charcoal is noted WAY back to 1500 B.C for wound healing, water purification, intestinal issues, etc. It’s made of natural elements such a coconut shells, husks, bamboo, etc. and has a negative electric charge that causes positive charged toxins to bond to it.
Activated charcoal works in a way that when ingested, the compounds bind to the toxins in your digestive system and allow them to be eliminated rather than reabsorbed by the body.
Please be sure to follow instructions on your specific Activated Charcoal supplement and as always, adjust for ages and sizes.
My husband and I simply swallow the capsules with water. Since my younger kids aren’t able to swallow capsules, their’s is opened and dumped into their cup. There’s no flavor, so no fight! Yay!
Where can you get Activated Charcoal?
I have a serious love affair with Nature’s Sunshine Products. This is a brand you’ll see me refer to quite often as it’s the one I choose to use for myself and my family.
Activated charcoal is ridiculously affordable for the comfort it brings. We don’t only use it just when someone is already sick but even as a preventative if any of us are around someone who was under the weather, to make our own toothpaste. It’s such a versatile supplement- there’s ton of things you can do with it!
The best activated charcoal I’ve yet to find can be found HERE.
Does Activated Charcoal Expire?
A common question I hear is, does activated charcoal expire? Activated charcoal is a very stable product. Generally there is no expiration date as well as it is kept in a cool, dry environment.
Healthy Helpful Tip- Activated Charcoal absorbs not only the bad guys but the good guys too. It is best to follow up with a good probiotic if you’re not already utilizing one. You can find some of my family’s favorite Nature’s Sunshine probiotics HERE.
*Please note that Activated Charcoal is by no means the same thing as barbecue charcoal! Do not ingest barbecue charcoal.
